Moviegoers in St. John's got a special screening today of Trail of the Caribou, a documentary detailing the Royal Newfoundland Regiment's battles in Europe.

The CBC documentary commemorates the 100th anniversary of the First World War battle at Beaumont-Hamel, France. Hosts Allan Hawco and Mark Critch bring the viewers around the locations in France and Belgium where caribou monuments have been erected to honour Newfoundland soldiers.

Viewers at the Avalon Mall Friday morning said the documentary gave them newperspective on the history of the Regiment, even if some of their own relatives fought in the force.

The documentary will be featured in a number of free public screenings this summer, including July 1 at the Signal Hill visitor centre.

The documentary was produced by CBC NL in partnership with the City of St. John's.
