A senior citizen is recovering after being attacked and mugged in Corner Brook on Tuesday night while leaving a bar.

Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Sgt. Tim Buckle said the woman, 82, was out celebrating her birthday at a bar on Broadway when an unknown woman knocked her down and stole the victim's purse.

The victim was at The 86er Pub playing video lottery games, when she decided to take her winnings and head home. She was mugged a short time later.

She managed to pick herself up and call police.

RNC officers arrived at the scene shortly before midnight, but there was no sign of the attacker.

Buckle said the unprovoked attack is a big concern for police in the community.

"We have reallocated resources within the Corner Brook region to focus on this investigation to ensure this senior citizen, this vulnerable member of our society, is provided with all the necessary resources that needs to bring this to a successful conclusion," said Buckle.

Buckle said RNC officers were on the street Tuesday night and Wednesday morning talking to nearby business owners, trying to find a lead on the attacker.

Meanwhile, the victim was treated at hospital and released. Police said she suffered a fracture to her upper arm in the attack.

The RNC is asking anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
