MUN students worry new parking building not enough

Memorial University of Newfoundland opened a new four-storey parking garage with 870 spaces in St. John's Monday.

Memorial University of Newfoundland opened a new four-storey parking garage with 870 spaces in St. John's Monday.

Some students worry though, it still wont be enough.

"I'm late for class now, actually," said Chad Kavanagh, who had been doing laps of Memorial University's St. John's campus looking for a free parking space.

Maria Bavis said been there, done that and paid the parking fines. "I drive around for about a half an hour every day. Sometimes I have to park in permit spots and get tickets, but I have go to class."

The new parking building will be shared with the Health Sciences Centre - 250 of its 870 spaces will be available for students.

Still university spokesperson Dave Sorensen said its still a huge improvement.

"There's no guarantee that there will be a parking space available but we think this has gone a long way to creating parking for people who want to drive to campus."

Student Maria Bavis fears parking will continue to be a struggle.

"I think you'll have to come before8 a.m.to even get a parking spot over there," she said.
