MUN will canvass public opinion on possible law school

Memorial University wants to know what the public thinks of establishing a law school in the province.

The idea was floated 25 years ago.

A 1987 report endorsed a law school in principlejust not at that time.

But last year the legal community supported another review. The next step public meetings will begin next week.

They'll be held in Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Corner Brook and Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The university said in a press release earlier this year that the review will examine the demographics of existing Canadian law schools, current and future needs for more lawyers, and benefits to Memorial.

"It's an appropriate time to again examine the feasibility of establishing a law school at Memorial," MUN president Gary Kachanoski said in February.

"It's been 25 years since the university last reviewed this avenue, and the local legal community is supportive of another review."

The review committee is expected to present a report later this year.
