MV Veteran docks in St. John's after transatlantic voyage

The newest ferry to service Newfoundland and Labrador is now finally in the province, being inspected in St. John's Harbour before finally starting its runinFogo Island-Change Islands next month.

The MV Veteran pulled through the Narrows around 3 p.m. Saturday.Over the next few weeks, crew members will be takingpart in training on the shipas well as performinginspectionsand getting the boatready for service.

The $50-million, 80-metre ferry was built by Dutch company Damen at its shipyard in Romania, and originally set sail for Newfoundland in August.

However,the vessel experienced what officials described as a "glitch" in one of its engines, and docked in Malta so representatives from the German engine manufacturer could assess the situation.

The ferry was eventually clearedto sail for Newfoundland, and was finally spottedoff the coastof the island bythe early morning hours on Friday.

Before docking in St. John's, it sailed past it's future home of FogoIsland and Change Islands and then by Bell Island.

A welcoming ceremony is plannedin St. John's Harbour next week.

Once in operation, the MV veteran will make routine runs between Farewell and Fogo Island/Change Islands.
