N.L. demonstrators protest tire-burning proposal

About 100 people marched through the streets of Corner Brook in western Newfoundland on Saturday morning to protest a proposal from officials at the city's pulp and paper mill.

About 100 people marched through the streets of Corner Brook in western Newfoundland onSaturday morning to protest a proposal from officials at the city's pulp and paper mill.

Kruger Inc. wants to experiment with burning tires as fuel for the mill.

Company officials have stated they believe the process is safe and will reduce the amount of oil needed to run the facility.

The protesters aren't buying that.

They fear toxins from the rubber in the old tires will pollute the atmosphere and could cause health problems.

They encouraged those who share their concerns to lobby the provincial and federal governments to forbid the company from moving ahead with the idea.

The province has given residents until Dec. 2 to submit comments on the proposal.
