N.S. man jailed hours after winning bail fight

A Nova Scotia man accused of plotting to kill police officers in western Newfoundland was thrown back in a cell Tuesday night, just hours after winning a bail fight.

Mark Baltzer was released from custody Tuesday night, after sureties were placed with the court by a relative and a friend.

But RCMP said Wednesday that within four hours of his release in Stephenville, in western Newfoundland, Baltzer was arrested for violating one of the many rules the provincial court had imposed upon him.

RCMP said Baltzer was spotted entering a lounge at a local motel,violating the conditions on which he was released.

Baltzer, 53, was arrested in June after he attracted attention aboard a Marine Atlantic ferry. RCMP said at the time that a passenger had contacted them with a report that Baltzer was planning to kill police officers in Corner Brook.

RCMP searched his car and found weapons, including a rifle and a crossbow.

Baltzerwas charged in June with illegally owning weapons, uttering threats and breaching court orders.

He appeared in provincial court in Stephenville on Wednesday afternoon on five additional charges, involving failure to comply with court orders.

His bail conditions had included an order to stay away from Newfoundland and Labrador, except for court appearances, to report to the RCMP in Nova Scotia in person twiceaweek, to contact RCMP officers there an additional three times per week, and to submit to the care of a psychiatrist.

Baltzer had also been ordered to maintain a nightly curfew at his home in Berwick, N.S.

Before his arrest in Newfoundland in June, Baltzer was already scheduled to appear in court in Nova Scotia onunrelated charges.
