Nalcor granted permanent injunction against aboriginal group

The Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador has granted a permanent injunction that will allow Nalcor Energy to continue construction work at its Muskrat Falls site without interruption.

The injunction was made against the NunatuKavut Community Council,president Todd Russell, and persons unknown.

Members of the aboriginal group started protesting on Oct. 10 near the gate leading to the construction site where Nalcor has been building an access road and a camp site.

A day later, the Crown corporation got a temporary injunction against the protesters. The court ordered the group to move its activities at least 50 metres away from the work site.

Vice-president Gilbert Bennett said Nalcor respects the group's right to protest. The corporation will maintain a "safety zone" where protesters can safely continue their demonstration nearby.
