Nick Coates fundraiser planned for 2014

The Nick Coates Memorial Motor Show raised over twenty thousand dollars for Mothers Against Drunk Driving in August. The organizers now say they're ready to raise even more money in 2014 for drunk driving awareness programs.

Friends of motorcyclist say they're ready to raise more funds for MADD in honour of their friend

When Nick Coates was killed in an alleged impaired driving accident in August, his friends quickly organized a car show in his memory.

The NickCoatesMemorial Motor Show raised over twenty thousand dollars for Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Coates, 27, died when his eastbound motorcycle collided with a pick-up truck on Kenmount Rd. in St. John's Aug. 16.

The driver of the truck, Ronald Thistle, was eventually charged with impaired driving.

The organizers now say they're ready to raise even more money in 2014 for drunk driving awareness programs.

"After the car show, we went to Nick's parents house and sat down, and just talked about how the show was, and directly from there it was 'what are we going to do next'?" said organizer Corey Prosser.

Prosser said that although he's paying attention to what's happening withThistle's court case, he'd rather focus on helping MADD, and keeping his friend's memory alive.

"Every year we will be doing this car show," said Prosser.

Ronald Thistle is expected back in court on Jan. 28.
