Nick Coates remembered at 2nd annual car show

A man who was killed by an alleged drunk driver was honoured at a fundraiser for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers thisweekend.

Hundreds gathered at the Confederation Building on Sunday for the 2nd annual Nick Coates Memorial Car Show.

Coates, 27, was driving his motorcycle on Kenmount Road in St. John's on Aug. 16, when he was struck by a pick-up truck that was turning onto the street from Polina Road.

Organizer Corey Prosser, with the Edition 709 car group, said friends and family created the event because Coates always wanted to put off a car show.

Prosser said this year's turnout was at least double that of the first event.

"It's amazing... We didn't think it was going to be this big," he said.

"Compared to last year, what we had, and this year... night and day."

Prosser said the high attendance numbers made the Coates family happy, because all of the day's proceeds will go a long way for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.

"Last year, we funded about $22,000, and it goes towards victims' families," he said.

"There's conferences that MADD holds on the mainland for victims to get together and really talk about the situation and talk about how they feel, and get a little bit of relief and talk to some families."

After the event on Sunday, the Edition 709 group posted on its Facebook pagethat more than 300 cars were registered for this year's event, and while they didn't have the final tally, they said that they hadraised more than $16,000.

"Nick, we did this all for you buddy," read the post. "See you all next year."
