New COVID-19 case in N.L., bringing total to 257

There is onenew caseof COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 257.

According to the provincial government,the newcase isin the Eastern Healthregion.

In total, there are 239cases in the Eastern Health region, eightcases in the Central Health region, fourcases in the Western Health region and sixcases in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region.

Six people are in hospital, down one from Friday. Threepeople are in intensive care.As of Saturday afternoon, 5,871people have been tested for COVID-19an increase of 286 from Friday with 5,614testing negative.

The total cases by age:

• 22 cases are under 20 years old.
• 37 are between 20 and 39 years old.
• 37 are between 40 and 49 years old.
• 56 are between 50 and 59 years old.
• 58are between 60 and 69 years old.
• 47 are 70 years old or older.

In all, 189 people have recovered from the virus, leaving 65 active cases in the province.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths in the province remainsat three.

'Find togetherness this weekend'

During Friday's provincial briefing, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald encouraged people to do their socializing at a distance this weekend and to follow public health recommendations when getting outside for fresh air.

"Please remember that physical distancing does not mean social isolation, so I encourage you to look for ways to find togetherness this weekend without gathering and to stay virtually connected with family, friends and neighbours," Fitzgerald said.

"If you are going to get out and enjoy nature this weekend, please do it safely. If you go for a hike, do it with people in your bubble."

The province's daily briefings will resume Monday.
