NLC shifting to pre-tax pricing system

Consumers who see two prices for the same product at the local liquor store can be forgiven for being confused, although the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corp. says it won't last long.

The NLC is currently showing the price of a bottle both before and after taxes.

Greg Gill, the NLC's director of marketing, said a new pricing system that is being introduced over the coming months will bring the NLC in line with how other merchants charge their consumers.

"This is very similar to what other retailers do," said Gill, adding that consumers will soon be given a receipt in which itemized products will show the before-tax prices. Applicable taxes will be presented near the bottom of the receipt.

"At the end of the day, really, the pricing is what it is," he said. It's just providing more level of detail for our customers at the shelf level to understand how the pricing is built."

The change coincides with new price changes. Gill said the NLC revises the prices for many products once a year to account for changes in transportation costs, manufacturers' prices and currency.
