NunatuKavut protesting against Muskrat Falls project

An aboriginal group in Labrador is holding demonstrations Thursday against the Muskrat Falls hydro project.

An aboriginal group in Labrador is holding demonstrations Thursday against the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project.

Members of NunatuKavut formerly the Labrador Metis Nation are stopping vehicles on the highway near Cartwright.

President Todd Russell says they're gathering support for their cause.

He says NunatuKavut wants to see benefits from the project.

"Our aboriginal rights and interests have been infringed upon," Russell told CBC News.

"They have not been respected. In fact we have been treated with disrespect and contempt."

Russell said they plan to move their protests around Labrador, including the Muskrat Falls area.
