Paradise dealing with discarded needles

The Town of Paradise is grappling with the issue of discarded needles and other drug paraphernalia in public areas.

Drug usershave beenthrowing used needles on the ground in a couple of neighbourhoods in the town.

On onesecluded cul-de-sac, homeowner Jeff Slade said he has been picking up drug paraphernalia for several months.

"It's a disgrace to Paradise," said Slade, a resident of Dakota Place.

"Before the winter, we came up and cleaned up the needles. They were all over the place."

Slade estimated he has picked up between 50 and 60 needles in the area.

Police stepping up patrols

"We have to do something," said Mayor Ralph Wiseman. "This is a real hazard to children in the area and we need to curb it."

Wiseman said the town has been considering videosurveillance to catch those responsible.

For now, he said police are stepping up patrols.

And Wiseman has a message for anyone who indiscriminately dumps dangerous drug material.

"If you're a drug user and you are using needles, then absolutely discard them in a very safe manner," he said.

"You are putting people at risk."
