Thanksgiving holiday #nltraffic focus of police operation

Police across Newfoundland and Labrador will be on the look-out over the holiday weekend for traffic violators.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and RCMP join forcesfor'Operation Impact.'

The annual eventstarted Friday and runs until Oct.12.

Operation Impact is a zero-tolerance enforcement initiativefocused on impaired driving, distracted drivingincludingcell phone use and textingseatbelt use and aggressive driving.

The goalis to enforce safety on the province's roads whileeducatingdrivers.

"This national initiative is in keeping with the RNC priority of ensuring road safety and is a direct response to the kind of devastation that can result from unsafe driving practices," RNCChief WilliamJanessaid in a release.

There will be an increase in police presence on highways, and police checkpoints will be set-up at various locations across the province.
