Police warn of phoney Newfoundland Power scam

The call display may read 'N.L. Power,' but the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is warning people that the power company is not calling customers looking for credit card information.

The RNC is warning scammers have been calling people identifying themselves as someone working with Newfoundland Power, seeking credit card information. Police say the callers are not with the company. (CBC)

The RNCsaid it received numerous calls on Tuesday from people who were targets of aphone scam.

The fraudsteridentifies themselves as being with Newfoundland Power, and asks the person on the other line to provide credit card information to pay their power bill or they will "terminate their services immediately."

Police said that Newfoundland Power is not calling customers looking for bill payments.

The RNC is reminding people not to give out personal or banking information over the phone or online, unless companyauthenticity can be confirmed.
