Premier's security involved in fatal shooting in Mitchells Brook

An officer of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, who was at the scene of the fatal shooting earlier today in Mitchells Brook, NL, was there to investigate an alleged threat against Premier Paul Davis, CBC News has learned.

CBC News has learned that an officer of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary,who wasat the scene of the fatal shooting on Sunday inMitchellsBrook, NL, was there to investigate an alleged threat against Premier Paul Davis.

The officer is a member of the premier's personal security detail, which provides protection to Davis and also investigates threats against him.

When contacted, the premier's office said it won'tcomment because the case isanactive police investigation.

Neither the RCMP nor the RNC have responded to questions aboutthe officer's presence in Mitchells Brook.

59-year-old man dead

In a release, RCMP said a member of the RNCwas in the community in St. Mary's Bay around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, following up on inquiries for an investigation.

During that inquiry, investigators said a shooting occurred, and a 59-year-old man was confirmed dead at the scene.

Holyrood RCMP, along with the major crimes unit and the forensic identification unit, are investigating.

The man's identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
