A peer review has found psychiatrist Dr. David Craig meets the standards of care in the psychiatric services he provides to inmates at N.L. corrections facilities.

Dr. David Craig treats many inmates at Her Majesty's Penitentiary in St. John's. (CBC )

"Overall Dr. Craig meets the standard of care, where that standard is comparable service provision in other provinces," Dr. Philip Klassen, a psychiatrist with the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, statesin his 21-page report.

Klassen looked at documentation, including 23 patient charts. He also interviewed Craig and corrections staff.

The external review was ordered last spring after inmates complained that Craig takes them off medication that was prescribed by their own doctors.

The justice department received the report on Sept. 20.
