The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is warning the public of an email and phone scam in which someone poses as the Canada Revenue Agency.

The RNC saidthe person asks for credit card, bank account and passport number information.

Sometimes the information is soughtdirectly, or people are referred to a website that looks similar to the CRA'sand asks for personal information.

The email claims that the CRA has calculated your fiscal activity and determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund. It then asks you to complete the refund form and mail it to a listed address.

Police saidsome of the emails may also contain software that can harm your computer, so people should not click on any of the links on the site.

The RNC saidthe purpose of the scam is identity theft, and those who receive the call should not give out information. Instead, they should call police or Crime Stoppers.
