Celebration of science aims to spark interest in children

A cross-Canada, all-ages event featured hands-on experiments to try and entice young people to get interested in science.

On SaturdayScience Rendezvousheld more than 300 events across the country in 30 cities, including St. John's.

"We are very excited to have it happening at Memorial University," said co-ordinatorLisa Breen.

Science Rendezvous is part of a larger event 10-day event, Science Odyssey. On Saturday most of Memorial'sfaculties of science had professors offer up their time and talents to showcase science to a new audience.

From seeing the physics department show off its Van de Graff generator to the Ocean Sciences Centre providing a marine life touch tank to the biology department, giving kids first-hand experience, there was no shortage of science-based fun.

"This day and age, science is integral in technology and innovation and it's really important to catch kids early and get them stimulated and interested in science," Breen said.
