Life doesn't always imitate Jaws.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax says it believes a call on Tuesday night about a shark biting a man in Placentia Bay was a hoax.

Spokesperson Jamie Tobin saidthe Canadian Coast Guardin Placentia received a radio message reporting the attack.

He said the attack wasn't viewed as crediblebecause of the obvious laughing in the background of the phonecall.

According toTobin, rescue staff assessed the situation and decided it was a fake emergency.

While the JRCC takes all calls that come in to search and rescue seriously, Tobin said it would have been a waste of resources to respond to the hoax.
