Source of St. John's stink pinpointed

City of St. John's officials say they now know the source of an odour that had some residents scratching their heads and pinching their noses.

City of St. John's officials say they now know the source of an odour that had someresidentsscratching their heads and pinching their noses.

Walt Mills, the city's director of engineering, said Friday the mysterious smell somepeoplein the south side of St. John's were complaining about this week is coming from the Riverhead waste-water treatment plant on the Southside Road.

Mills said the plant is emptying a sewage tank and the unpleasant smell will be around for at least a few more days.

"The plan is to drain this tank which will be finished by early next week. Then, once we get that tank drained, the odour issue should dissipate," said Mills.

He said the tank is being drained so some repair work can be done.
