Stephenville pays to keep airport aloft

The west coast Newfoundland town of Stephenville is giving its airport money to stay open.

Town officials say that without the money from the town, the airport wouldn't be able to operate through the winter.

"The airport's going through a rough time at the moment," said Mayor Tom O'Brien. "This arrangement will see the town invest up to $200,000 into the operation. It needs supplies in place so it can stay open throughout the winter."

O'Brien said the airport needs the money to buy batteries for lights and supplies to keep its runway clear.

The bailout comes with conditions. O'Brien said theairport must restructure its board and develop a new business plan.

He hopes that provincial and federal governments will also give the airport more money.
