The new Virginia Park Elementary School in St. John's will be built on a familiar site.

It's going to be put up in the same place as the current school.

The provincial government announced three years ago it would build the new school thereuntil it was later discovered the site used to be a dump.

This led to a search for an alternative location, which delayed construction.

On Friday, the government said it decided to build on the current site after all, once the land has been completely remediated.

"The site selection process has been a complicated one, and I am pleased that we have reached this milestone in the planning process," said Minister of Education Clyde Jackman in a written statement.

The new school is expected to be finished by the fall of 2016.
