Summer recreational food fishery begins today

It's a day many look forward to - the opening of the summer recreational food fishery.

The 2015 summer recreational food fishery starts Saturday, and continuesfor three weeks, closing on Aug 9.

Patricia Williams with DFO told CBC the rules are the same as last year.

"There aren't any changes. We have the retention limit of five groundfish a day including cod," she said.

"If it's a circumstance of three or more people in a vessel, the maximum retention limit is 15 groundfish. And that same retention limit applies for tour boats as well."

Williams reminds the public that there's no highgrading, so fishers are not permitted tothrow anything back.

She also encourages people to watch out for yellow and pink tags on some fish. Those tags can be given to DFO for cash and help with the department's science assessments.

Fishing is not permitted in the Eastport and Gilbert Bay Marine Protected Areas.

The fishery will reopen on Sept. 19 for nine days.
