'Sunshine list' law coming to N.L. in fall 2016

The province has announced legislation to make public all civil servant salaries totalling $100,000 or more.

The provincial government is moving forward with legislation that will require all civil servant salaries in Newfoundland and Labradortotalling more than $100,000 a yearto be made publicly available.

In a statement Tuesday, the province announced that legislation will be introduced in the House of Assembly sometime this fall.

Commonly known as "sunshine lists," similar salary reportsaremade alreadypublic in B.C., Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia.

The province said the disclosure will involveall government departments, agencies, boards, commissions and Crown corporations, and will list information such as the employees' names, base salary and any other compensation such as overtime and severance.

The complete list will be published on the government's Open Data webpage.
