Police have arrested a man in connection with a sexual assault that occurred late Tuesday night near The Rooms cultural complex in downtown St. John's.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said in a statement that it had arrested and taken a man, 45, into custody "without incident" in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The man is expected to appear in provincial court on two counts of sexual assault and one charge of theft.

A female reported a sexual assault in a parking lot off Harvey Road that is near The Rooms, a Tim Hortons coffee shop and the RNC's own headquarters.

Before the arrest, police had said that there was "a safety threat" to the public with the suspect at large.

Police are not releasing the age of the complainant.
