Teachers vote to accept benefit-cutting changes to pension plan

Most members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association have voted to accept a pension deal that raises premiums andreduces benefits.

Members of the union voted to accept the amendments made in a tentative deal announcedApril 8.

Teachers voted 91 per cent in favour of acceptance, with more than 80 per cent of members casting ballots.

"Teachers have agreed to pay increased premiums and reduce future pension benefits in order to ensure the sustainability of the teachers' pension plan for this generation and future generations of teachers," NLTA president JimDinn said in a statement.

Earlier this month, Premier Paul Davis announced the union had accepted an agreement in principle.
