The federal government has announced it is spending an extra$27 million onwhat it calls "extensive rehabilitation work" on a portion of the Trans-Canada Highway in eastern Newfoundland.

According to a newsrelease, the work on the TCH within Terra Nova National Park will include the addition of passing lanes.

Once completed there will be 13 passing lanes through the 42.2-kilometre stretch of the TCH in Terra Nova.

In addition, the work will include roadside brush clearing, widening of the road bed, installing guardrails and culvert extensions.

A newsrelease states improvements to intersections will also be included.

The present state of the highway through the park is single-lane only, with no passing lane opportunities.

It can be a frustrating stretch of highway for motorists, especially when there is ongoing road work.

Starting Monday earlier this week, the highway through Terra Nova was down to just one lane to accommodate construction in the area.

The work is set to happen through 2016-17.
