'It's a lot of fun': Athletes thrilled with Trudeau visit to N.L. Summer Games

Athletes from across the province are living it up at the 2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in Conception Bay South.

Years of hard work and training are being put to the test at thegames, which are held every four years, this year coinciding with the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Beach volleyball players Hannah Peyton (Grand Falls-Windsor) and Ashley Jacobs (Corner Brook) said they've been watching the Olympics every chance they get, but were also focused on bringing home medals of their own.

"We're definitely aiming for top three, it would be wicked for us," said Peytonon Monday.

Peyton and Jacob are eachplaying ondifferent teamsbut they've bonded while staying inthe Athletes Village.

"I love the Athletes Village, Ithink it's a great idea to be able to meet more people after your games," saidPeyton.

Mostof the 1,500 or so athletes are bunkingatthe village, and many have taken advantage of the close quarters to make new friends.

'A lot of hot girls'

"In the events and stuff, there's a lot of hot girls," said New-Wes-Valley's Andrew Knee.

"It's a lot of fun. They give us food and our own rooms and stuff like that."

For the athletes, whose ages range from 12 to 18, there's a definite summer camp vibe at the games.

"You get to hang out with your friends that you get to see and haven't seen in a whileand the girls are pretty good too," said Clarenville's Cole Mackey.

The two boys remain focused on the court butit wasclear that making the podium wasn't their only goal at the competition.

"[Hoping for] Just a medal and a couple more numbers too," said Knee.

Trudeaumania ensues

On Monday, the athleteswere surprised to learn that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau would be stopping by for a visit.

There was a definite rumbling in the crowd as athletes rushed to get a seat in the dining hall, where Trudeau was expected by lunchtime.

When the Prime Minister entered the room,there was a roar of applause, as teenagers and adults alike grabbed their cell phones to document the experience.

Baseball player Chantel Patey was beside herself after Trudeau tapped her on the back.

"I was just sitting here minding my own business and all of the sudden this guy grabs my shoulders," she said.

"Oh my God! It was just amazing, like, I'm so proud."

Patey hoped it would be a good luck charm forher team's performance during the rest of the games.

"I'm blessed man. We're going to win."

The Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games continue in Conception Bay South through August 21.
