A Christmas feed, thanks to Mount Pearl-Paradise business group

Volunteers at George Street United Church dished up turkey with all the trimmings Friday to 160 people, with the Mount Pearl-Paradise Chamber of Commerce picking up the tab.

The church in downtown St. John's, along with the Jimmy Pratt Outreach Centre, cooks a hot meal every Friday. They also servebreakfast on Mondays.

This year, the business group decided to get involved and raised $1,200 to buy food.

"We've never done this before," said Lysa Ivey,the office administrator with the Chamber of Commerce."We wanted to give back."

She said the people who turned out for a feed of turkey were mostly men between 20 and 35, or seniors, "who go there for company or to keep warm."

There was a lineup at the door, and food was on the table shortly after 10 a.m.

Diners also went home with a bagof toiletries soap, razors, toothpaste, etcput together by the chamber.
