Vandals strike Corner Brook cemetery, toppling headstones

There isoutrage in Corner Brook after someone knocked over about a dozen headstones in a local cemetery.

Passersby discovered the damage.

The act of vandalism that doesn't sit well with Calvin Prettyor the church where he volunteers.

"Everybody is pretty tormented with it," Pretty told CBC News.

"It's just a senseless act."

A number of faiths bury their dead in the cemetery, although the graveyard attack focused on members of the United Church.

Pretty believes the kicking spree took place a few days ago. He first learned of it Tuesday.

Some of the relatives of those lying in these graves have found out as well, he said, and are upset.

The tombstones can be fixed; none suffered serious damage.

But repairs won't be made until the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary finishes its investigation.
