February temps in St. John's tied for warmest in history
No, those mild winter days weren't a dream last month tied for thewarmest February on recordin St. John's.
The average daily high was +2.6 degrees Celcius, tying1984 for the warmest February of all time.
In fact, if you look at the temperature highs for February versus last July, it's hard to tell the two months apart.
And what a difference a year makes. Lookat snowfalls across the island on Feb.24 last year (a lot), versus the same day this year(barely any).
But CBC meteorologistRyan Snoddondoesn't recommend putting the shovels and hatsaway just yet. In the past, awarm February hassometimesbeen followed by significant snowfall.
"Warmer than average temperatures or not, all it takes is one chilly air mass and system moving through the region," wrote Snoddon in a post.
In 1999, for instance, a record 68 cm of snow fell on April 5 that year, followed by 14 more cm the next day.
But regardless of the future, Snoddon is all forenjoying the mild temperatures while theylast.
