WestJet flight from Gatwick Airport to St. John's diverted to Ireland

A WestJet flight heading to St. John's from London's Gatwick Airport was diverted Saturday morning.

St. John's boundWestJet flight WS25 was diverted Saturdaydue to a guest medical, West Jet spokesperson Lauren Stewart said.

Apassenger was takento a local hospital for treatment,NandiO'Sullivan, head of communications at the Shannon Airport, confirmed.

The flight was headed to St. John's from GatwickAirport, London's second largest airport, but was diverted to Shannon, Ireland, at 11:53 a.m. GMT Saturday, O'Sullivan said.

Because the diversion was unexpected, Stewart said, the airporthad to perform an overweight landing.Such a landingalways requires a maintenance inspection.

Stewart said the West Jet flight is scheduled to leave Shannon at8:00 a.m. GMT Sunday and passengerswill be given meal vouchers and put up in hotel rooms.
