Environment Canada is forecasting a winter storm to hit much of Newfoundland and Labrador on Wednesday and Thursday.

A special weather statement has been issued related to an area of low pressure expected to pass west of the island, as well asa low pressure system approaching Labrador from the Gulf of St. Lawrence expected to cross into eastern Labrador.

Environment Canada said that it is too early to determine exactly how the system will affect many areas, however strong winds are expected across the entire island Wednesday and Thursday, with significant snow and blowing snow possible on Wednesday before tapering off or changing to rain.

CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon says the system looks like it may deliver snow to the province, with "an icy mix" and rain in southeastern Newfoundland.

"Winds are looking even stronger with this one, especially over western Newfoundland where easterly winds will really howl in exposed areas along the coast," Snoddon said.

Significant snow and strong winds are also expected across most of Labrador mid-week.

In addition, several warnings arein effect for Monday. They includea winter storm warning for the Burgeo Highway, a wind warning for the southwest and west coasts, a rainfall warning for the southwest coast and a wind warning for the notoriousWreckhousearea on Newfoundland's west coast.

Marine Atlantic ferry crossings between PortauxBasques and North Sydney have been cancelled as a result of the high winds.

The crossing scheduledto departPort aux Basques at11:45 a.m. has beencancelled, while the 11:45 p.m. crossing was rescheduled to 6 a.m. tomorrow.
