2 Baffin Island groups oppose offshore seismic testing

The Hunters and Trappers Organization of Clyde River, Nunavut, is opposing all seismic testing in Baffin Bay and Davis Strait.

The HTO has sent a letter to the National Energy Board. The Hamlet of Clyde Riverhas also voiced its opposition to the testing to the NEB.

Hamlet councillor Jerry Natanine said people are telling the board they oppose a proposed offshore seismic survey by TGS-NOPEC, Petroleum Geo-Services and Multi Klient Invest.

He said Baffin Bay and Davis Strait are fragile and ecologically diverse with many whales, walrus, and seals, and there isn't any solid information about how seismic testing would affect them and their environment.

"They don't have any information how halibut, turbot or shrimp or any micro-organisms would be affected, and any negative effects on those would have a negative effect on the seals which is our mainstay in this community," he said.

The Mittimatalik Hunters and Trappers Organization in Pond Inlet is also speaking out against seismic testing.

In a letter tabled Monday in the Nunavut legislative assembly, the HTO said it also fears seismic testing would have a negative impact on animals in Baffin Bay.
