2 named to Order of Nunavut

Artist Kenojuak Ashevak and musician Charlie Panigoniak will receive the Order of Nunavut this year.

Hunter Tootoo, Speaker of the legislative assembly, made the announcement Tuesday.

"The objective of the order is to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the cultural, social or economic well being of Nunavut," he said.

"This year, the advisory council has selected two distinguished Nunavummiut, whose contributions to Inuit art, culture and music are internationally renowned."

Ashevak is one of Nunavut's most celebrated artists, known for her drawings and prints. Her work has been shown around the world, and has been featured on Canadian stamps. She was named a companion of the Order of Canada in 1982.

Panigoniak has been a celebrated singer-songwriter for decades and was also a broadcaster at CBC, before retiring last year.

A maximum of three people may be named to the order each year. Thefirst three to receive the honour in 2011were the late Jose Amaujaq Kusugak and Mark Kalluak, and the Rev. Michael Gardener.

Panigoniak and Ashevak will receive the Order of Nunavut at an investiture ceremony later this year.
