4 candidates enter race for Baffin Island seat

Three men and a woman are running in the Oct. 16 byelection to be the next MLA for the Nunavut riding of Tunnuniq on north Baffin Island.

Nominationsclosed Fridayto replace Jobie Nutarak, who died in a snowmobiling accident while on a hunting trip in April.

The candidates are James Arvaluk, Rhoda Cunningham, Joseph Krimmerdjuar and Sam Omik.

One of the smallest ridings in Nunavut, the only settlement is Pond Inlet with a population of about 1,200.

Nutarakwon the newly created seat in 1999 and held on to it during the last election in 2004.

He was the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly when he died.
