Air Greenland plans another summer of Iqaluit-Nuuk flights

Air Greenland says tourists, not oil or mining companies, are keeping its route alive between Iqaluit and Nuuk.

Passengers are mostly tourists, not business travellers, says airline

Passengers exit an Air Greenland Dash 8 after arrival at the Iqaluit airport from Nuuk in 2012. The summer flights between the two cities resume this year on June 13.

Air Greenland says tourists, not oil or mining companies, are keeping its route alive between Iqaluit and Nuuk.

The airline will again offer flights this summer between the capitals but with a slightly shorter season. Flights will be onMondays and Fridaysfrom June13to Sept.15.

"We have quite a few tourists coming and also Inuit, Canadian Inuit coming tovisit friends and family in Greenland," saidCamillaSiezingof Air Greenland.

Air Greenland re-started the route in 2012, expecting to mainly serve mainlytravellersfrom the oil and miningindustries.

So far, some fishing companies use the route for crew changes on vessels fishing in Davis Strait, but the airline says there haven't been a lot of travellers from other resource sectors. It says that's mainly because of all the political debate over those sectors in Greenland.

"There are a lot of decisions that have not been made yet so a lot of the companies are just a little bit hesitant or haven't got the licences that they wanted yet so it's a long process" said Siezing.
