Airplane broken into in Pond Inlet

Canadian North says it won't leave its planes overnight at the airport in Pond Inlet, Nunavut,anymore after a Dash 8 was broken into and damaged Wednesday night.

The damage forced the company to cancel a scheduled flight to IqaluitThursday morning and flights scheduled in the coming days could also be affected.

Tracy Medve, president of Canadian North, said this is not the first time one of their planes has been damaged in Pond Inlet.

"This has occurred several times now in that community, and so we cannot leave our airplanes there overnight anymore, under the current security arrangements at the airport."

Medve said it's up to the Government of Nunavut to provide better airport security.

In February, the community's MLA warned the Nunavut legislature about poor security at the airport.

RCMP said one man is in custody after last night's break-in and charges are pending.
