Beaver Creek fire department hopes new building lures volunteers

Beaver Creek has a new fire hall and the local fire chief hopes it will help attract more volunteers.

"It's kinda hoped that as the community sees us doing more things and sees the building and sees us in the building that more people will be interested in coming out to training nights and actually participating in the fire department," says volunteer fire chief Dan Robinson.

Currently there are five people who make up the volunteer fire crew, in the village of about 100 people. Robinson would like to see that number double. "Ideally we'd like to have more with the fire department but it's a problem Yukon-wide, getting volunteers for a lot of these volunteer services in the community."

He says the building includes space for training as well as a new home for the volunteer EMS service. According to Robinson, it has a crew of six volunteers

The larger building means the community now has space for a new cube-style ambulance, he says.

"It's a significant improvement over our last hall and it really is going to improve our capabilities in Beaver Creek," says Robinson.

The fire and EMS crews movedin earlier this summer.
