Christmas comes early for Whitehorse Food Bank

The Yukon government is giving the Whitehorse Food Bank $750,000 enough money to buy the building it currently rents and open it up to other service groups.

The Yukon Government is giving the Whitehorse Food Bank a $750,000 grant.

Premier Darrell Pasloski says the money will allow the food bank to buy the building it currently rents.

Food Bank Director Stephen Dunbar Edge says the money could allow the food bank to rent unused space in the building to other non-profit groups.

He says that could help turn it into more of a community space.

It would be people who have an interest in serving the public at large from a not-for-profit perspective, he says. That could be related with different health and social services type initiatives that address poverty and food security in the Yukon.

Dunbar Edge says, currently, a lot of the cash the food bank collects goes to rent and utilities.

He believes buying the building will help ensure the food bank's long term viability.
