Construction on Yellowknife's main drag slated for summer

"Not only are we inconveniencing residents, it interrupts our bus routes, we have to plan emergency routes properly and things like that," says the Director of Public Works regarding this summer's construction plan.

Replacement of water mains will shut down Franklin Avenue, between the fire hall and Forrest Drive

People in Yellowknife can expect another full summer season of road construction.

Last year the city experienced the busiest construction season ever, with numerous road closures and detours throughout the summer, including the temporary closure of Franklin Avenue the city's main artery.

In the coming weeks, a section of Franklin Avenue will be closed again for water-main replacements.

Throughout the summer, crews will be working between the fire hall and the Forrest Drive intersection.

"As much as Yellowknifers don't want to see us there we don't really want to be there either," said ChrisGreencorn, the Director of Public Works for the City of Yellowknife. "The mains are deep not to mention the inconveniences. Not only are we inconveniencing residents, it interrupts our bus routes, we have to plan emergency routes properly and things like that."

It's not clear exactly how long the road will be closed.
