The company that bought two empty diamond cutting and polishing plants in Yellowknife over two years ago is on the list of businesses and individuals who haven't paid their property taxes.

Deepak International owes the city of Yellowknife more than$21,000, according to a list of arrears published by the city this week.

The company bought the two empty diamond cutting and polishing plants at the airport almost two and a half years ago.

At the time Deepak International bought the plants, the territorial government trumpeted the sale as the rebirth of the city's diamond cutting and polishing industry, but the plants remain empty.

In addition to owing property taxes, Deepak is being sued by the company that helped arrange financing to buy the plants.

In court documents, Chippingham Financial Group says Deepak reneged on an agreement to pay it $615,000 for arranging the financing.
