Deh Cho MLA Michael Nadli charged in Fort Providence assault

Michael Nadli, MLA for N.W.T.'s Deh Cho region, has been arrested and charged with assault causing bodily harm after an incident in Fort Providence on Sunday afternoon.

Michael Nadli, MLA for N.W.T.'sDeh Cho region, has been arrested and charged with assault causing bodily harm after an incident in Fort Providence on Sunday afternoon.

Police in Fort Providencereceived a call for assistance at around3p.m. on Sunday about anindividual being assaulted at a residence,according to an RCMP press release issued Tuesday morning.

RCMP saythe suspect left theresidence but turned himself in to police a short time later.

The victim was treated atthe community's health centre fornon-life-threatening injuries.

Nadlihas appeared in front of aJustice of the Peace and was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.

Nadlihas previously confirmed to CBC he will run for re-election in the November territorial election.

Tim Mercer, clerk of the Northwest Territories legislative assembly, said an MLA can be removed from office if he or she is incarcerated following a conviction.
