In a Yellowknife courtroom on Friday, Justice KaranShaner called the assault plannedand deliberate.

Before Shaner shared her decision,Sangris, 43, spoke softly to the court, sayinghe wassorry for everything that happened.

He saidhe realizedhow his past traumas have affected him andhe wants to do better.

In her decision,Shanerconsidered Sangris' own history of physical, emotionaland sexualabuse, as well asthe many letters she received in support of Sangris, agreeing thathe's "had more than his fair share of hardship."

ButShanersaidthe nature of Sangris'crime was not motivated by those factors, but by sexual gratification. Sheagreed with the Crown, saying Sangris manipulated the victim by offering him pornography, cigarettes and alcohol before the assaultand then asking him to keep it all a secret.

The Crown saidsexual assaults involving minors are too common in the territory.

"The courts certainlytake this seriously and the community does as well," said Brad Demone, Crown Prosecutor. "It's important that our youth are made to feel safe and that this type of defence is denounced."

Along with his time in prison,Sangris has to submita DNA sample to a national database.

Once he's out of prison, he has to stay away from children for 10 years, unless he's supervised. He'll also have restricted access to the internet for fiveyears.

Sangris'name will also be added to the national sex offender registry for 20 years.
