Iqaluit RCMP called for review after video shown in court

The Ottawa Police Service will doan external investigation into how police handled a man in an Iqaluit jail cell.

Nunavut RCMP called for the review after a video was shown in court that appeared to show Eetooloo Ejetsiak being abused by police.

In a written statement released last week, police said the video was taken out of context.

They say earlier in the day Ejetsiak acted as if he might be a danger to himself.

Police also allege Ejetsiak was agitated and appeared as if he might assault the officers.

Nunavut RCMP argue the use of force shown in the video was appropriate.

The investigation by Ottawa police will be entirely independent.
