Felix Taqqaugaq shooting: Nunavut coroner to hold inquest

Nunavut's chief coroner says her office will conduct an inquest into the death of a 29-year-old man shot by RCMP in Igloolik three years ago.

Inquest will follow independent review being conducted by Ottawa police

Nunavut'schief coroner says heroffice will conduct an inquest intothe death of a 29-year-old man shot by police in Igloolik three years ago.

Felix Taqqaugaq was shot by an RCMP officer during an incident in the hamlet of about 1,800onMarch 20,2012. He died from his injuries.

NunavutRCMPhavedeemed thedeath a non-culpable homicide,meaningit was done in self defence or without intent.

An RCMPstatement at the time said officerswent to aman's home at around 8 p.m. to check on his well-being.The statement went on to say an adult male advanced towards officers wielding a weapon and utteringthreats before he was shot by an officer.

One officer was injured in the incident, sustainingnon-life threatening injuries.

Padma Suramala, Nunavut's chief coroner,says Ottawa police are in the final stages of an independentreview of the incident.

Suramala says the inquest will be held once that review is completed.
