First Nations female, aged 16 to 20, found dead in Whitehorse

Whitehorse RCMP say theyre investigating a homicide after the body of a First Nations female, between the ages of 16 and 20, was found on a walking trail in the McIntyre subdivision.

So far, the name, age and cause of death have not been confirmed.

The incident is being investigated as a homicide and foul play is suspected, a news release says.

Police got a 911 call around 10:15 Monday evening.

They responded with all available resources, a news release says, including the Yukon RCMP Major Crimes Unit, Forensic Identification Services and a police service dog.

The investigation continued through the night.

Police say theres no indication the public is at risk.

However, both police and the Kwanlin Dun First Nation are urging everyone in the city to be conscious of their personal safety.

This is the second suspected homicide in the community in six months.

KwanlinDun Chief Doris Bill went door to door this afternoon to speak with area residents and says there are safety concerns.

"When there is a crisis in the community, we have a plan that is put together but what it really boils down to is that if people want a change, that change has to come from within," she says. "As a government, we can only do so much."

Counselling services are being offered at the Kwanlin Dun Health Centre and a community meeting and dinner will be held Wednesday at the Na Kwa Ta Ku potlatch house.
