A prized piece of Yellowknife history was stolen last weekend, and then quickly returned after an appeal on social media.

Someone stole the door off the first fire truck used at the Giant Mine townsite.

"They cut it off with a hacksaw," said Walt Humphries, president of the N.W.T. Mine Heritage Society.

The truck dates back to the 1930s when Giant Mine and Yellowknife were separate towns, and currently sits near the mine site, outside the Mine Heritage Society.

Humphries said after someone appealed to the thief on social media, the door was anonymously returned with a note.

"From the note we got, someone took it as a souvenir as a neat thing to have in their man cave," Humphries said. "But in a way, the truck is a historic artifact."

"It's like going into a public park and seeing a statue and cutting off one arm cause you think it would look neat in your rec room," he said.

Humphries saidhe's happy the door was returned, as it would have been costly to replace.
